France Transfers 17 Top Narcotics Traffickers to New Ultra-Secure Vendin-le-Vieil Prison

This first phase deploys strict individual isolation drawn from Italy’s mafia-fighting 41-bis system to sever inmates’ external ties.

Après quatre mois de travaux, la prison de haute sécurité de Vendin-le-Vieil (Pas-de-Calais) a reçu, ce mardi, ses premiers détenus.

Overview

  • Seventeen of the 100 designated high-risk traffickers arrived at Vendin-le-Vieil on July 22 as part of a rollout targeting 100 inmates by July 31.
  • Transfers were conducted under ultra-high security with GIGN and ERIS intervention teams, CRS support, drone surveillance and specialized escort convoys.
  • Facilities have been upgraded with reinforced cells, millimeter-wave scanners, caillebotis on windows and hygiaphone-only visiting booths to enforce the isolation regime.
  • Mohamed Amra’s relocation has been postponed beyond the initial convoy and will be processed in a later transfer wave.
  • A second high-security quarter at Condé-sur-Sarthe is scheduled to open in mid-October to house 100 more traffickers under the same strict conditions.
