France Tops EU Purchases of Russian Gas in August as Russia Ranks Third Overall
The update comes with the Commission’s proposed ban on new Russian-gas deals still awaiting member-state approval.

- France imported €251 million of Russian gas in August, the highest in six months, making it the EU’s largest buyer for the month.
- EU purchases from Russia totaled €959 million in August, giving Russia a 15.4% share of the bloc’s gas import value and the No. 3 supplier position.
- By value, the EU’s leading August suppliers were the United States at 29.9% (€1.9 billion) and Algeria at 19.5% (€1.2 billion), followed by Norway at 12.1% (€752 million) and the United Kingdom at 9% (€549 million).
- For January–August 2025, Russia’s share in EU gas imports stood at 16.2% as EU spending on Russian gas rose 8% year over year to €9.75 billion.
- Country shifts included Belgium dropping to €139 million after July’s peak, Hungary reaching €231 million for second place, and Italy resuming €28 million in pipeline flows with no LNG cargoes.
