France to Revamp Electricity Peak and Off-Peak Hours by 2025

The new system aims to better align reduced electricity rates with evolving consumption patterns and renewable energy production.

  • The Commission de régulation de l'énergie (CRE) plans to adjust peak and off-peak electricity hours starting in mid-2025, with implementation continuing through 2027.
  • The changes aim to reflect shifts in energy consumption, including increased demand from electric vehicles and seasonal variations in renewable energy production.
  • Off-peak hours, currently concentrated overnight, will partially shift to early afternoon during summer months to utilize abundant solar energy.
  • Approximately 15 million customers, or 40% of households and small businesses, are currently subscribed to peak and off-peak electricity plans.
  • Public consultation on the proposed changes concluded in November, with final decisions expected in January 2025.
