France to offer driving theory exam in French Sign Language this summer

The new format will embed video interpreters in exam screens to boost accessibility for an estimated 4,000 deaf or hard-of-hearing candidates annually

À partir du 7 juillet, un interprète en langue des signes sera incrusté dans l’écran d’examen pour traduire les questions.

Overview

  • Starting July 7, all road education offices nationwide will deploy the LSF-enabled driving theory test.
  • The revamped exam includes 1,600 multiple-choice questions fully translated by on-screen French Sign Language videos.
  • Departments will host specialized LSF test sessions once or twice each month instead of the rare annual slots formerly available.
  • Officials say removing court-appointed interpreters will lower candidate costs and shorten administrative delays.
  • With a driver’s license vital for mobility and inclusion, deaf applicants already achieve nearly an 80% pass rate compared to just over 50% overall.
