France to Ban Smoking in Beaches, Parks and School Zones from July 1

The health ministry says the measure seeks to protect children from secondhand smoke as part of a broader tobacco control program

  • The outdoor smoking ban takes effect on July 1, 2025, and will cover beaches, public parks and gardens, school grounds, bus stops and sports facilities.
  • Individuals caught smoking in newly restricted areas can be fined up to €135 for each violation.
  • More than 1,600 communes have already imposed similar bans in around 7,000 public spaces ahead of the national rollout.
  • Officials aim to make children born in 2025 the first “tobacco-free generation” under France’s 2023-2027 National Tobacco Control Program.
  • Café and restaurant terraces remain exempt initially while plans for tighter vaping regulations are slated for mid-2026.
