France Sets 1.18% Minimum Wage Rise for Jan. 1 Without Extra ‘Coup de Pouce’

The move reflects expert guidance after inflation came in lower than expected.

Overview

  • From 1 January 2026, the Smic will be €1,823.03 gross per month and €12.02 per hour under the statutory formula.
  • A full-time worker on the Smic will see a net increase of roughly €17 per month.
  • The government opted against a discretionary top-up after an expert panel advised restraint, and the final 1.18% lift came in below the group’s earlier ~1.4% projection due to softer inflation.
  • Unions including the CGT, CFDT and CFTC condemned the decision, with the CGT urging a €2,000 gross Smic and the CFTC arguing a 5% rise would be sustainable.
  • About 2.2 million private‑sector employees (12.4%) earn the Smic, which is recalculated from targeted inflation and base wage gains, with an additional automatic raise triggered if inflation tops 2% in‑year.
