France Refers Shein to Prosecutors Over Childlike Sex Dolls Listed on Marketplace

Paris prosecutors have the case following a DGCCRF referral that stemmed from inspections of the site.

Overview

  • France’s consumer watchdog said it found sexual dolls of apparent child appearance offered on Shein, citing the listings’ descriptions and categorization.
  • The DGCCRF notified the Paris prosecutor and Arcom and requested the removal of the pages involved as well as the relevant product category.
  • Shein said the items were taken down immediately and that its Marketplace Governance team opened an internal investigation and a platform-wide review.
  • Authorities flagged the lack of effective age filtering and reiterated that offenses can carry up to seven years in prison and a €100,000 fine, with separate penalties for inadequate age gates.
  • The case unfolds days before Shein’s planned permanent BHV store opening in Paris and after three French fines this year totaling €191 million.
