France Records 251,270 Abortions in 2024 as Outpatient, Medical Methods Expand

Overview

  • National totals rose by 7,000 from 2023, with a standardized rate of 17.3 per 1,000 women aged 15–49 and an abortion-to-live-birth ratio of 0.38.
  • Medication now accounts for about 80% of procedures and 45% occur outside hospitals, with roughly 1,600 teleconsultation dispensings recorded.
  • Midwives performed half of city-based procedures in 2024, and 1,442 midwives alongside 1,820 physicians carried out IVG in private practice.
  • Rates remain highest among 25–29 year-olds and vary widely by region, from 12.4‰ in Pays de la Loire to 23.1‰ in PACA and up to 46.5‰ in Guyane.
  • Repeat procedures were notable, with 21,514 women having a prior IVG within 12 months, while the 2022 shift to a 14‑week legal limit accounted for only about 1–3% of cases.
