France Moves to Suspend Food Imports With EU-Banned Pesticide Residues

EU approval within 10 days will determine whether France can enforce the new import suspensions.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard said a decree will be issued in the coming days, with the ministry indicating publication on Tuesday.
  • The measure targets residues of mancozeb, glufosinate, thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim, which are prohibited for use in the EU.
  • Listed items include avocados, mangoes, guavas, citrus, grapes and apples from South America or elsewhere, with additional fruits and potatoes barred from entry or sale if such residues are detected.
  • Authorities plan reinforced checks by a specialised brigade to verify compliance with French sanitary standards at borders and within the country.
  • The announcement comes as farm unions prepare meetings at Matignon and fresh mobilisations, while the government seeks relief on fertilizer costs under the EU carbon border mechanism and braces for a possible EU‑Mercosur deal around January 12.
