France Makes First Arrests in Louvre Crown Jewels Heist

Strict legal secrecy limits public details until custody ends, with police concentrating on recovering the missing jewels.

Overview

  • Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed arrests were carried out on Saturday evening in the investigation into the Oct. 19 theft.
  • Reporting from French media and the Associated Press says two men in their 30s known to police were detained, including one stopped at Charles de Gaulle Airport as he tried to fly to Algeria.
  • More than 100 investigators are reviewing about 150 DNA traces, surveillance footage and phone data, and the stolen items have been listed in Interpol’s Stolen Works of Art Database.
  • The thieves took eight Napoleonic-era pieces valued at roughly €88 million ($102 million), which remain missing, and the Apollo Gallery is closed for the inquiry.
  • The Louvre has acknowledged security gaps, including a mis-aimed camera near the entry point, and remaining jewels were transferred to the Banque de France for safekeeping as officials decried leaks about the case.
