France Logs 272,382 Intimate-Partner Violence Victims in 2024, Up 0.4% on 2023

The Interior Ministry’s count reflects only incidents reported to authorities, and surveys indicate most victims do not file a report.

Overview

  • The SSMSI reports that police and gendarmerie recorded 272,382 victims in 2024, with individuals counted for each distinct offense registered.
  • After a doubling from 2016 to 2023, the annual tally was described as quasi stable, edging up 0.4% following a 10% rise the previous year.
  • Women made up 84% of recorded victims, and men accounted for 85% of alleged perpetrators.
  • Recorded incidents were 64% physical, 31% psychological or verbal, and 5% sexual, with 134 partner or ex-partner homicides in 2024.
  • The highest recorded rates were in Pas-de-Calais, La Réunion, Nord, Somme and Seine-Saint-Denis, and survey data suggest only about one in six victims reports to authorities.
