Overview

• Unveiled at June 12’s UN Ocean Summit in Nice, the plan aims to raise France’s plastic recycling rate from 26% to the EU’s 50% target by 2025.
• The government will cease purchasing plastic bottles and beverage packaging by 2026 to lead by example.
• A nationwide deposit-return scheme for plastic bottles will be rolled out in 2026 to encourage consumer returns and reuse.
• The €1.6 billion annual eco-contribution will fund innovation in reusable packaging and incentives for products incorporating recycled plastics.
• France will seek amendments to EU law to impose equivalent environmental requirements on imported goods.
