France Intercepts Yacht Carrying Record 1.8 Tonnes of Narcotics in French Polynesia

In Papeete, dismantling of the yacht has led prosecutors to investigate its European crew, vessel ownership, broader Mexico-to-Tonga drug network.

Overview

  • Authorities intercepted the yacht in the Marquesas Islands on July 14–15 and found over 900 kg of cocaine and 180 kg of methamphetamine on board.
  • Following transfer to Papeete, dismantling uncovered an additional 714 kg of cocaine, 49 kg of methamphetamine, 11 Glock pistols and 24 magazines.
  • Officials estimate the total narcotics haul at 1.8 tonnes valued at over $381 million on the black market.
  • Prosecutors are examining the roles of three Dutch and German crew members and probing the vessel’s ownership.
