Overview
- The protests, which escalated over the weekend of Oct. 17, began as mass demonstrations over the rising cost of living and in some cities devolved into widespread lootings, arson and clashes with police.
- Authorities have put partial nighttime curfews in place in multiple cities, with Marseille, Nice and Bordeaux enforcing specific hours and some local restrictions extended through Oct. 26.
- Ministers say law enforcement made roughly 2,300–2,500 arrests, more than 600 police and gendarmes were injured, about 3,000 commercial establishments were affected and 149 people were placed in pretrial detention.
- Judicial and policing measures moved quickly: courts have held expedited trials with immediate sentences, a suspect linked to the Limoges town-hall arson was detained in an operation with RAID support, and the interior minister offered his resignation which President Macron refused.
- The government announced emergency aid to limit economic fallout, including interest-free Bpifrance loans up to €50,000, simplified tax-debt deferrals and a dedicated support fund to speed insurers’ and firms’ recovery.
