Overview
- On Saturday, October 31, thousands of demonstrations took place across France for the third consecutive weekend in a movement against the rising cost of living and failures in education.
- The government deployed an 'exceptional' force of about 70,000 police and gendarmes and closed more than 40 Paris metro stations to prevent a repeat of the October 17 unrest.
- The Conseil d'État upheld the prefecture’s decision to force marches onto a peripheral Paris route from Porte de Bagnolet to Porte de Charenton, overturning a tribunal order that would have allowed a Bastille–Nation route.
- Most marches proceeded peacefully in daylight but dispersed into violence in several cities, with projectiles, barricades and at least one Molotov attack that burned a gendarme; hundreds of arrests were reported.
- The Paris prosecutor has opened an inquiry and assigned the IGPN to investigate video-shown police violence against a 17-year-old from the October 17 protests while organizers and unions plan further actions in early November.
