France Faces Wet Start to Christmas Holidays With Cévenol Rains and Mountain Snow

Forecasters expect a brief, wetter pattern to give way early next week to cooler, drier continental air.

Overview

  • Météo France forecasts rain across nearly all regions on Saturday and Sunday as the holidays begin.
  • A localized épisode cévenol in the Cévennes could deliver up to about 250 mm in 24 hours, with the most exposed area from northeast Hérault through Mont Aigoual to Ardèche.
  • Snow is expected in the mountains from roughly 1,500 m, with the rain–snow line trending toward about 1,000 m in the southern Alps and parts of the Pyrenees by Sunday night.
  • Easterly to southerly winds will strengthen near the Mediterranean, with gusts around 50–70 km/h inland and up to 80 km/h on the most exposed coasts.
  • Night and early‑morning fog may develop in places and temperatures, still above seasonal norms this weekend, are projected to fall early next week as a continental flow settles in.
