Overview

  • The decree published on June 29 took effect July 1 and extends no-smoking zones to public beaches, bus stops, parks, school surroundings, open sports facilities and libraries.
  • Individuals who violate the new outdoor ban risk a uniform fine of €135 while e-cigarettes and smoking on restaurant and café terraces remain exempt.
  • Health and Family Minister Catherine Vautrin cited that 90 percent of smokers begin before age 18 to justify the stricter rules aimed at youth prevention.
  • France had already banned smoking in workplaces, public transport, playgrounds and private cars carrying minors, with car violations penalized up to €750.
  • Municipalities in Italy, Spain and Germany have adopted similar outdoor smoke-free policies as part of a broader European push for cancer prevention and public health.
