France Confirms New DNC Outbreak as Research Ramps Up and Holiday Blockades Persist

The government is sticking with whole-herd culling and commissioning accelerated research.

Overview

  • The Agriculture Ministry confirmed a new dermatose nodulaire contagieuse (DNC) outbreak in Haute-Garonne, bringing the national tally to 115 affected premises since June.
  • Seventy-two cattle were culled in Juzet-d'Izaut under the state’s three-pillar response of whole-herd depopulation on detection, vaccination, and movement restrictions.
  • In Saint-Marsal (Pyrénées-Orientales), a cow that had been vaccinated tested positive, which officials said can occur before immunity builds over about three weeks; four animals from that herd were put down.
  • The South-West vaccination drive across ten departments is underway, with 33.9% of the targeted cattle—241,217 head—vaccinated as of December 23 and a mid-January deadline set by authorities.
  • Farmer blockades continue into Christmas, notably on the A64 and A63, after unions met President Emmanuel Macron on December 23, as ministers announce intensified research and surveillance efforts with CIRAD and the national research agency while leaving the culling protocol unchanged.
