France and PACA Launch €520M Upgrade of Southern Alps Transport for 2030 Winter Games

The plan will cut Marseille-Briançon rail travel by over an hour through 150 kilometers of upgraded track

L’organisation a peiné à démarrer du fait de la dissolution puis d’atermoiements pour trouver un président.

Overview

  • The government and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region have jointly committed €520 million to modernize railway and road networks serving the Southern Alps ahead of the 2030 Winter Olympics.
  • The rail component includes €342 million for 150 kilometers of track refurbishments, with state and regional authorities each providing €150 million.
  • The region will invest €45 million to enhance safety and year-round access on key mountain road corridors in the Hautes-Alpes.
  • An 18th-century Vauban fort in Briançon will undergo at least €120 million in renovations to host athletes during the Games before being converted into residential housing.
  • Officials say the program will open isolated Alpine valleys, strengthen links between the coast and mountains and create lasting local benefits.
