France Adds €1,000 Bonus for Europe-Built EVs as Volkswagen Unveils Cheaper Models

The targeted top-up steers purchases toward local supply chains, with eligibility to be set by ADEME in the coming days.

Overview

  • The one-off €1,000 premium starts 1 October and can lift total purchase aid to roughly €5,200 for eligible buyers.
  • Only vehicles assembled in Europe with a European battery will qualify, with the precise battery-origin criteria not yet defined.
  • ADEME will publish the list of eligible models shortly, complementing the ecological bonus revalued since July.
  • Volkswagen presented four urban EVs across VW, Cupra and Škoda from about €25,000, targeting a 2026 launch and roughly 20% of the small EV segment.
  • Competitive and policy pressures are rising as BYD plans to build the Dolphin Surf in Hungary from late 2025 to avoid EU tariffs and industry leaders press Brussels to relax the 2035 combustion-engine ban.
