Grand Teton National Park is tracking the number of days since the last shoe incident in Lizard Creek Campground. The tally, which previously included 19 shoes, is up to 32 as of last week.

Overview

  • Rangers have posted ‘WANTED’ posters featuring a fox sketch and advised campers to store footwear in tents, vehicles or bear boxes to prevent further thefts.
  • After initial signs when 19 shoes went missing, the fox’s haul climbed to at least 32 pairs despite repeated warnings.
  • Some visitors have left out shoes intentionally hoping to glimpse the fox, unintentionally reinforcing its bold behavior.
  • Officials warn that habituation from these interactions could force the fox’s relocation or euthanasia to protect both animals and people.
  • Park staff continue to monitor the situation and urge campers to scare away foxes rather than approach, feed or encourage them.
