Fox News Extends May Ratings Lead as CNN and MSNBC Experience Major Declines

Its top-rated primetime lineup drove double-digit year-over-year viewer gains that overshadowed CNN and MSNBC’s steep demo drops.

Overview

  • Fox News ranked as the fourth highest-rated network in May with 2.9 million average primetime viewers behind only CBS, TNT and NBC.
  • The network’s total day viewership reached 1.6 million, marking a 21 percent increase from May 2024 and extending its streak of monthly growth to 51 straight months.
  • CNN sank to one of its worst months ever in the adults 25–54 demo with an average primetime audience of 81,000 as total day viewers fell by 24 percent.
  • MSNBC’s new primetime lineup, including The Weeknight and Jen Psaki’s show, saw demo viewership drop by more than 40 percent year over year and failed to reclaim audiences lost after Rachel Maddow’s schedule change.
  • Top-rated Fox shows The Five, Jesse Watters Primetime and Gutfeld! each surpassed three million viewers, leaving CNN and MSNBC shut out of the cable news top five in total audience.
