Fox News Anchor John Roberts Hospitalized With Severe Malaria After On-Air Health Scare

Doctors are treating the anchor with IV artesunate following likely exposure during recent travel to Indonesia.

Overview

  • Roberts was diagnosed on Aug. 25 after uncontrolled shivering during his broadcast and blood tests showing low platelets and white blood cells led his doctor to send him to the ER.
  • He remains hospitalized on IV artesunate and reports fluctuating symptoms, including alternating chills and sweating.
  • The 68-year-old believes he contracted malaria during a two-week trip to Indonesia, with symptoms starting about 10 days after he returned.
  • He posted on X that a doctor told him it was the first malaria case the doctor had seen and he thanked colleagues, including Trace Gallagher, as well as staff at Inova Health.
  • Roberts says he hopes to be discharged soon and aims to return to work Tuesday, Sept. 2, noting that malaria is typically imported to the U.S., which sees roughly 2,000 cases a year.
