Fourth Met Officer Sacked After Panorama Exposé as Hearings Shift in Light of New Footage

The Met says swift disciplinary action is key to rebuilding trust.

Overview

  • PC Jason Sinclair-Birt was dismissed without notice on Friday after a panel ruled his boast about striking a detainee, captured by BBC Panorama, amounted to gross misconduct.
  • His case followed Thursday’s fast‑track hearings that removed Sgt Joseph McIlvenny, PC Martin Borg and PC Philip Neilson, all of whom were found to have committed gross misconduct.
  • Neilson was filmed making floridly racist and violent remarks, Borg was found to have revelled in the use of force and made Islamophobic comments, and McIlvenny made misogynistic remarks and trivialised victims’ accounts.
  • All four former officers will be placed on the College of Policing Barred List, and the Met has replaced the Charing Cross custody team and made local leadership changes.
  • The Met said some upcoming misconduct hearings are being adjourned after the BBC provided unaired footage to the IOPC, which continues its investigation.
