Four Rescued After Boat Capsizes Near Oceanside Harbor Mouth During High Surf

Officials cite elevated surf tied to Hurricane Narda as the key hazard.

Overview

  • Oceanside lifeguards and fire crews pulled four people from an overturned recreational boat around 12:25 p.m. near Harbor Beach just outside the harbor entrance.
  • All four were evaluated on scene for minor injuries and released without hospital transport, according to Oceanside Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Brandt.
  • Following the rescue, the Marine Safety Unit secured the vessel and towed it out of the surfline and back into the harbor to remove the hazard.
  • The National Weather Service has a beach hazards statement in effect through Tuesday, with surf of 4 to 7 feet and sets to 8 feet on south and southwest facing beaches.
  • Authorities urged boaters and beachgoers to check conditions, avoid hazardous surf zones, and wear lifejackets during the period of strong rip currents and breaking waves.
