Four North Side Red Line Stations Reopen With Accessibility Upgrades

The reopenings cap the first phase of the $2.1 billion overhaul; future work will include under-track community spaces along the corridor followed by a southern Red Line extension

Overview

  • Argyle, Bryn Mawr, Lawrence and Berwyn stations resumed service on July 20 after four years of renovations
  • Upgrades feature digital train-arrival screens, elevators, escalators, new turnstiles, platform benches, overhead canopies and improved lighting
  • CTA said the overhauls advance its goal of making all stations fully accessible under the modernization project launched in 2019
  • Beginning in 2026, the authority will convert 10 blocks under the elevated tracks into pedestrian trails, dog parks, playgrounds and fitness areas through 2027
  • CTA expects to break ground in early 2026 on a 5.5-mile, $5.75 billion southern extension of the Red Line from 106th Place to 118th Street
