Four Men Sentenced to 20 Years for 2022 Gang-Rape of Tamil Nadu Doctor

The Mahila Court in Vellore convicted the perpetrators, with a juvenile suspect still facing trial, for the abduction, assault, and robbery of the victim and her colleague.

  • The incident occurred in March 2022 when the victim, a doctor from Bihar, and her male colleague were abducted by a gang posing as a shared auto service in Katpadi, Tamil Nadu.
  • The gang attacked the male colleague and raped the doctor at knifepoint near the Palar riverbed, also robbing them of valuables and withdrawing ₹40,000 from their accounts.
  • Four adult suspects—an auto driver, a daily wage worker, and two of their friends—were sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹25,000 each by the Vellore Mahila Court.
  • A fifth suspect, a juvenile, is undergoing trial before the Juvenile Justice Board, with no verdict yet issued in his case.
  • The conviction was achieved through diligent evidence collection by the police, who uncovered the crime during an unrelated arrest for a drunken brawl involving three of the suspects.
