Four Killed in Attack on Michigan Latter-day Saints Church

Federal agents are securing possible explosive devices at the burned church.

Overview

  • The attacker drove a vehicle through the front entrance during a Sunday service, opened fire with an assault-style rifle, and set the building on fire, according to local police.
  • Police returned fire and killed the suspect, described as a 40-year-old man from Burton and identified in some reports as Thomas Jacob Sanford, within minutes of the first 911 call.
  • Officials now report four deaths after two additional bodies were found in the rubble, with at least eight other victims injured, including one in critical condition.
  • The FBI is leading the investigation on site as FBI and ATF bomb technicians address suspected improvised explosive devices reported at the scene.
  • Authorities have not stated a motive, searches and identifications are ongoing, and national leaders including President Donald Trump and the U.S. attorney general issued statements condemning the violence.
