Four Jharkhand Crafts Win Geographical Indication Status

NABARD says the legal recognition will protect product authenticity and open market and livelihood opportunities for weavers and tribal artisans.

Overview

  • NABARD announced on Sunday, June 14 that Bhagaiya silk, Kuchai silk, Munda jewellery and Jharkhand bamboo craft have been granted Geographical Indication tags by the Indian registry.
  • The bank says it led a multi-year process that identified each product’s unique traits, organised producer groups, documented traditions and guided stakeholder consultations for the GI applications.
  • Officials expect the GI status to help Bhagaiya and Kuchai silk protect regional origin, improve market visibility and let weavers seek premium prices for authenticated silk products.
  • NABARD says recognition for Munda jewellery and bamboo craft will preserve tribal designs, expand market access for artisans and support small enterprises that use local materials and skills.
  • Turning GI recognition into higher incomes will depend on enforcement of GI rights, new branding and marketing, stronger value chains and continued support so producers capture more value.
