Four, Including Two Teens, Charged With Murder in Bronx Basketball Tournament Shooting

Overview

  • Two teenagers and two men — a 16-year-old, a 17-year-old, 20-year-old Daeven Reyes and 25-year-old Robert Royal — were arrested Sunday and charged with murder, attempted murder and weapons offenses, with three also facing gang-assault counts.
  • The gunfire during a community basketball event at Haffen Park around 7:27–7:30 p.m. Saturday left five shot, including 32-year-old Jaceil Banks, who was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center.
  • Anthonaya Campbell, 17, was struck in the head and remains in critical condition, while a 30-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man sustained wounds and are stable, police said.
  • Investigators recovered multiple firearms, documented roughly 48 shots fired and six guns recovered, and police say they believe the shooting was gang-related while asking witnesses to contact detectives.
  • The case unfolded in the Bronx’s 47th Precinct, where shootings are up this year despite citywide declines, and the four suspects were awaiting arraignment Monday.
