Four Hikers on Psychedelic Mushrooms Rescued Near Giant Ledge in Catskills

State data cite 139 rescues since July, with mushroom-related calls adding to rangers' workload.

Overview

  • A satellite text from near Giant Ledge at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 reported the group lost after taking mushrooms, with one suffering a "debilitating high."
  • Three DEC forest rangers, joined by Pine Hill Fire and Shandaken Ambulance, located the hikers around 6:45 p.m. and escorted them to the trailhead for evaluation.
  • Officials said the four, all men in their 20s, required no hospitalization and were driven to their rental lodging.
  • A ranger returned the next day and recovered the group's lost car keys from a sling bag hidden under a log in tall ferns.
  • The case follows a similar May incident in New York's mountains and comes as DEC reports 139 search-and-rescue responses since the start of July.
