Four Held Over Manchester Synagogue Attack as Watchdog Reviews Police Shooting

The government says police will be able to curb repeat demonstrations by considering their cumulative impact after hundreds were detained at a London rally backing the proscribed group Palestine Action.

Overview

  • A court granted warrants to detain two men, aged 30 and 32, and two women, aged 46 and 61, for up to five more days, while an 18-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were released with no further action.
  • Investigators said attacker Jihad Al‑Shamie, 35, wore a fake explosive device, may have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology, and was on bail after a recent arrest for rape.
  • The police watchdog is examining Greater Manchester Police’s use of lethal force, including whether officers’ actions contributed to the death of congregant Adrian Daulby; three other men remain in hospital.
  • The Metropolitan Police reported 492 arrests at a Trafalgar Square protest in support of the banned Palestine Action group, which went ahead despite appeals to postpone.
  • Ministers plan to amend Sections 12 and 14 of the Public Order Act to let police factor in the cumulative impact of repeated protests and will review whether existing powers, including protest bans, are sufficient.
