Four Former Marcy Guards Sentenced in Robert Brooks' Fatal Beating

Plea deals followed body-camera recall footage that captured the restraint-room assault.

Overview

  • Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina received 22-year prison terms after pleading to first-degree manslaughter in place of murder charges.
  • Sgt. Michael Mashaw was sentenced to three to nine years and David Walters to two and one-third to seven years after second-degree manslaughter pleas, a day after a judge rejected Walters’ bid to withdraw his plea.
  • Prosecutors said a fail-safe on officers’ body cameras recorded about 30 minutes of silent video that showed Brooks being punched, kicked and restrained while handcuffed.
  • Ten officers were charged in the case; earlier, Christopher Walrath got 15 years on a manslaughter plea, Glenn Trombly pleaded to second-degree gang assault with sentencing pending, and David Kingsley was later convicted at trial as co-defendants Mathew Galliher and Nicholas Kieffer were acquitted.
  • Special prosecutor Bill Fitzpatrick read statements from Brooks’ relatives in court as the family pressed for prison reforms and another defendant, Michael Fisher, awaited a January manslaughter trial.
