Overview
- Polling is being held on Monday in four Ernakulam local-body wards — Ayyappankavu (Kochi Corporation 19), Kolencherry East (Poothrikka ward 8), Puliyanam South (Parakkadavu ward 4) and Madaplathuruth (Vadakkekara ward 9) — with about 10,003 registered voters expected to cast ballots.
- The vacancies arose for different reasons: Ayyappankavu after Congress deputy mayor Deepak Joy won the Thripunithura MLA seat, Kolencherry East after Twenty20’s Pooja Jomon resigned in protest over her party joining the NDA, and Puliyanam South and Madaplathuruth after sitting members left for jobs overseas.
- Major parties and local groups have fielded candidates: in Ayyappankavu the UDF’s A. K. Ajithkumar, the LDF’s P. K. Usman and the NDA’s K. V. Bijoy are contesting, while Poothrikka and the two panchayat wards feature UDF, LDF, NDA and Twenty20 or independent candidates.
- Officials expect results to be declared on September 29 and analysts say the outcomes are unlikely to change which coalitions control the affected local bodies because each ruling front still holds overall majorities.
- Watch for the Kolencherry East result as a test of Twenty20’s decision to run separately and for any shifts in local vote shares that could signal wider voter sentiment on the new UDF state government and local issues such as services and overseas migration.
