Four Dead in Arequipa Minivan–Cistern Crash During Spate of Southern Peru Road Disasters

Investigators are securing scenes to determine responsibility.

Overview

  • The latest crash occurred around 6 a.m. at km 1064 of the Panamericana Sur in Cocachacra, where a Costanera Buss Perú S.A.C. minivan (VAN-966) hit a parked cistern (BRK-818 with trailer VAU-984), leaving four people dead and six injured.
  • Road police, UPIAT specialists, firefighters, and a provincial prosecutor are handling evidence collection, victim identification, and body recovery, with the injured taken to the Cocachacra health center and remains to be transferred to the Mollendo morgue.
  • In a separate incident hours earlier at km 1000, a PeruRail locomotive struck a water cistern (BNL-737), splitting it in two; driver Eder Manuel Cárdenas Rojas and passenger Neder Cárdenas Rojas were hospitalized in Arequipa, and the train operator Manuel Andrés López Juárez was unharmed.
  • Covinca crews worked to clear the Arequipa rail–road corridor after the train impact, which occurred as a mineral convoy headed toward Matarani and left part of the consist stopped roughly 80 meters from the collision point.
  • Earlier this week in Puno, a plate-less combi rolled about 20 meters off the Cuyocuyo–Huancasayani road near Ñacoreque, injuring six people who were transferred to Clínica Pacífico in Juliaca as police and the Sandia prosecutor opened a formal investigation.
