Four Dead After Central Madrid Building Collapses During Hotel Renovation

Authorities have ended the search and opened judicial and forensic inquiries as engineers examine a sixth-floor structural failure and possible excess load.

Overview

  • Firefighters recovered all four bodies overnight at 4 Hileras Street near Ópera after a progressive internal collapse that began on the sixth-floor terrace slab.
  • The dead include three construction workers from Mali, Guinea and Ecuador and a female administrative employee, all linked to contractor ANKA; three other workers were injured, one hospitalized.
  • Eleven or more fire crews with SAMUR medics, municipal and national police, drones and canine teams worked through the night before declaring the rescue complete.
  • City officials say the building had permits granted in February to be converted from long-disused offices into a four-star hotel, and nearby residents have been allowed back home.
  • Investigators are focusing on a failure of the sixth-floor forjado and are assessing whether stacked construction materials created excessive load, with judicial and technical probes underway.
