Four Chinese Brands Enter Australia’s Top 10 as China Rises to No. 2 Vehicle Source

Lower prices with expanded model ranges are drawing Australian buyers to Chinese marques.

Overview

  • FCAI data show 20,070 Chinese-built vehicles were sold in August, taking the year-to-date tally to a record 141,858.
  • BYD ranked sixth for the month with 4,877 sales, followed by GWM (eighth, 4,488), MG (ninth, 3,927) and Chery (10th, 3,305), each up year on year.
  • China supplied more vehicles to Australia in August than Thailand, trailing only Japan, with totals rising further when China-built Teslas and Polestars are included.
  • The Electric Vehicles Council reports fewer than 18,000 Teslas sold January through August, down from 28,000 a year earlier, with Model 3 volumes sharply lower and a late-August recall adding pressure.
  • Electric and hybrid deliveries remained a minority of the market for the month, with less than 15,000 combined compared with more than 90,000 non-electric sales across EVC and FCAI reports.
