Four Carmelite Missionary Sisters Killed in Tanzania Road Crash

Investigators are still reconstructing the crash’s cause.

  • The victims were Sister Nerina De Simone, 63, from Italy; Sister Lilian Kapongo, 55, a Tanzanian and the superior general; and Kenyan Sisters Damaris Matheka, 51, and Stellamaris Muthini, 48.
  • According to witness accounts, the SUV carrying the sisters was heading to Mwanza airport to return to Italy when it collided with a heavy truck.
  • The vehicle’s driver also died, and another sister remains hospitalized in very serious condition.
  • Founded in the Ragusa area with a main base in Lazio, the institute received public condolences from Bishop Salvatore Rumeo of Noto.
