Four Bulgarian Construction Workers Die in Hamburg Scaffolding Collapse, Others Injured and Missing

  • Four Bulgarian construction workers died and several others were injured when scaffolding collapsed from the eighth floor into an elevator shaft at a construction site in the HafenCity district in Hamburg.
  • The incident occurred at the Uberseequartier, one of the largest construction sites in the city, which is part of major redevelopment that features offices, houses, hotels, and shops.
  • Initially, the fire department reported five fatalities but later revised this number down. One of the injured is in a critical condition while an unknown number of people are believed to be missing, buried under the debris.
  • Emergency services, with around 60 personnel, were swiftly on the scene, which was evacuated, and a technically challenging rescue operation is underway.
  • The cause of the scaffolding collapse remains unclear, but the workers were believed to have been constructing an elevator shaft at the time of the accident.
