Four BSW Lawmakers Quit Party, Putting Brandenburg Coalition on a CDU-Backed Lifeline

The dissidents say they will remain in the parliamentary group to avoid toppling the government.

Overview

  • A Landtag committee recommended ratifying two media-state treaties after BSW finance minister Robert Crumbach voted with the SPD and CDU, while BSW floor leader Niels-Olaf Lüders voted no.
  • The full vote on 19–20 November will rely on CDU support because most of the BSW faction plans to oppose the treaties, depriving the government of an internal majority on the issue.
  • The four departing deputies cited authoritarian tendencies and radicalised positions in the BSW, filed a no-confidence move against the faction leadership, and called for changes but pledged to keep supporting the coalition.
  • Minister President Dietmar Woidke said the coalition stands and pressed the BSW to resolve its internal dispute quickly, as SPD leaders signaled the cross-party help should remain an exception.
  • BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht criticized the breakaway lawmakers yet rejected ending the coalition, while state chair Friederike Benda reaffirmed party opposition to the treaties.
