Four Berlin-Born Przewalski Horses Released in Kazakhstan’s Altyn-Dala-Steppe

Two of the mares wear GPS collars to track their movements as part of a plan to reintroduce at least 40 Przewalski horses into their native habitat.

Overview

  • The Czech Army airlifted four Przewalski horses from Tierpark Berlin to Kazakhstan's Alibi reintroduction center in spring 2024.
  • On June 12, 2025, the horses were released into the Altyn-Dala-Steppe, where they joined three earlier arrivals from Prague.
  • Two mares, Umbra and Wespe, wear GPS collars to provide real-time data on their movements and habitat use.
  • This initiative makes Kazakhstan the third nation after China and Mongolia to restore wild populations of these once-extinct horses.
  • Under the 'Return Of The Wild Horses' program, European zoos and conservation partners aim to reintroduce at least 40 Przewalski horses into Kazakhstan’s native grasslands.
