Overview
- A federal grand jury on July 31 returned a three-count indictment charging Jashanpreet Singh with unlawful firearms dealing, unlawful possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle.
- Prosecutors say Singh attempted to sell an undercover officer a short-barreled rifle, three assault weapons, three machine-gun conversion devices and a revolver during a June 6 meeting.
- A search of Singh’s Lodi residence uncovered a second machine gun, conversion device, silencer and explosive devices including a hand grenade and a suspected Claymore mine that were destroyed by a bomb squad.
- Singh failed to appear in state court on July 21, prompting a bench warrant, and was arrested by FBI agents at San Francisco International Airport on July 26 as he tried to board a flight to India.
- The case is part of the Justice Department’s Operation Take Back America and Project Safe Neighborhoods and carries a potential penalty of up to 25 years in prison and $510,000 in fines.
