Foster + Partners to Design Tiara-Inspired Bridge for Queen Elizabeth II Memorial

Unveiled this month, the concept pairs a translucent bridge inspired by her wedding tiara with statues of the monarch, a Prince Philip Gate, a network of landscaped gardens

The translucent bridge is inspired by the tiara Elizabeth wore on her wedding day.
The bridge is one part of a design which also includes gardens, paths and statues.

Overview

  • The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee selected Foster + Partners from five shortlisted teams to develop a permanent tribute in St James’s Park
  • The masterplan centers on a glass bridge echoing the Queen Mary Fringe tiara, symbolizing the late monarch’s unifying role and replacing the existing Blue Bridge
  • Sculptural elements include a statue of the Queen in a civic space at Marlborough Gate and a Prince Philip Gate at Birdcage Walk, with a sculptor yet to be appointed
  • A series of gardens connected by meandering paths will reflect her ties to the UK and Commonwealth, with ecological measures to protect the park’s biodiversity
  • The design will undergo further refinement with the committee ahead of an April 2026 unveiling to mark her 100th birthday, with costs estimated at £23 million to £46 million
