Overview
- Halvorson remains in Parkland Memorial Hospital’s burn unit with second- and third-degree burns that will require skin grafts, along with a dislocated knee, a possible shoulder tear, and other musculoskeletal injuries.
- Lieutenant Troy Gallagher was hurt while helping free Halvorson during the rescue, received treatment at a hospital, and was released.
- A mayday was declared after the garage roof collapsed, CareFlight transported Halvorson, a second alarm was struck, and crews brought the fire under control in about an hour with roughly 42 apparatus and close to 90 personnel on scene.
- The blaze was reported just before 11 a.m. on the 200 block of South Williams Street in the Historic Southside, and the residents were not home at the time.
- The cause is under investigation as neighbors share video of the collapse and report the home had been vacant for about two months, and the firefighters’ union has launched a fundraiser to help the family.
