Fort Moore Renamed Back to Fort Benning, Honoring WWI Hero

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reinstates the base's original name while shifting its dedication from a Confederate general to Corporal Fred G. Benning.

Fort Benning, Georgia — originally named after a Confederate general, Henry Benning — was was renamed as Fort Moore in 2023 as part of a broader effort to rename bases with Confederate-era names. Moore had two namesakes — Lt. Gen. Harold “Hal” Moore and his wife, Julia.
