Fort Bliss Soldier Charged With Attempting to Share M1A2 Abrams Data With Russia

A joint DOJ–Army Counterintelligence Command probe has resulted in charges under the Espionage Act, Arms Export Control Act.

Justin Simmons, United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas, announced the arrest Wednesday of Taylor Lee Adams, 22, of El Paso. The Fort Bliss active-duty Army soldier has been accused of trying to transmit data to the Russian government.

Overview

  • Taylor Adam Lee, 22, an active-duty Army soldier at Fort Bliss holding a Top Secret/SCI clearance, was arrested on August 6 and charged with attempted transmission of national defense information and unlicensed export of controlled technical data.
  • Prosecutors allege Lee sought to transmit operational and vulnerability details of the M1A2 Abrams main battle tank to what he believed was the Russian Ministry of Defense.
  • In June Lee is said to have posted controlled technical information online and in July he handed over an SD card containing classified and Controlled Unclassified Information before delivering tank hardware to an El Paso storage unit.
  • The FBI’s Washington and El Paso field offices, with support from the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command, are leading the investigation and preparing for prosecution in the Western District of Texas.
  • Lee faces prosecution under the Espionage Act and the Arms Export Control Act and remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in federal court.
