Formosa Ends Indefinite Reelection, but Clause Lets Insfrán Run Again in 2027

A transitional provision resets the count on his current mandate under the new limits, prompting plans for a fresh challenge before the Supreme Court.

Overview

  • The Constituent Convention approved a reform to Article 132 limiting the governor and vice governor to one consecutive reelection with a required gap of one term thereafter.
  • The transitory clause deems Insfrán’s 2023–2027 term the first under the new rules, which would allow a new bid in 2027 and, if successful, a tenure that could reach 2031.
  • The move follows the national Supreme Court’s December 2024 ruling that struck down Formosa’s unlimited reelection as contrary to republican principles of periodic renewal.
  • The 30-member body, controlled by the Justicialist Party, passed the changes after six of nine opposition delegates resigned weeks earlier alleging irregularities.
  • Opposition figures said they will return to the Supreme Court to seek to block Insfrán’s eligibility under the transitional mechanism.
