Former USWNT Coach Vlatko Andonovski Returns to NWSL, Hired as Coach and Sporting Director for Kansas City Current
Back-to-Back NWSL Winning Coach Steps in Following Team’s 11th Place Finish Last Season; Reunites with United States Internationals Sam Mewis and Adrianna Franch.
- Former USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski is rejoining the NWSL as the coach and sporting director of the Kansas City Current, marking his return, where he previously led FC Kansas City from 2013 to 2017.
- Andonovski, whose last stint with the USWNT ended following their round of 16 exit from the Women's World Cup, the worst finish in their history, will now helm Kansas City Current that finished 11th in the last NWSL season.
- Skilled players Sam Mewis and Adrianna Franch, who are U.S. internationals, will be teaming up again with Andonovski as he takes on his new roles at Kansas City Current.
- Andonovski's successful tenure in the NWSL includes leading FC Kansas City to back-to-back championships in 2013 and 2014, and winning the Coach of the Year award twice in 2013 and 2019.
- The decision follows the firing of former manager Matt Potter earlier in the 2023 season, who was temporarily replaced by Caroline Sjöblom.
