Former US Women's National Team Coach Vlatko Andonovski Hired to Lead NWSL's Kansas City Current

Former USWNT coach returns to native Kansas City in the hopes of reviving the underperforming team's performance, bolstered by significant investments from ambitious owners in new training and stadium facilities.

  • Former U.S. Women's National Team coach, Vlatko Andonovski, has returned to Kansas City to lead the current National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team, Kansas City Current, after resigning from the national team in August 2023.
  • Andonovski's track record includes a 51-5-9 record over his four-year tenure with the USWNT, and he led FC Kansas City to consecutive championships in 2014 and 2015.
  • Despite stepping down from the USWNT role following a disappointing World Cup result, the Current's co-owners expressed optimism about the appointment and believe Andonovski's experience and ability to develop talent will keep the team competitive.
  • The Current team struggled in the 2023 season, finishing 11th in the 12-team NWSL; Andonovski replaces outgoing interim coach Caroline Sjöblom, who took over for former coach Matt Potter in April.
  • Kansas City Current has seen significant investments from its owners, including $15 million in a new training center and $120m in a new stadium due for completion in 2024, setting up new infrastructure for Andonovski to build upon.
