Former U.S. Officials Warn of Espionage Risk from Chinese EV Plant in Michigan

The plant, developed by a subsidiary of China-based firm Gotion High-Tech, is part of a $2.4 billion investment in the U.S., raising national security concerns.

  • Former CIA Director Leon Panetta and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warn that a proposed Michigan electric vehicle plant, being developed by a subsidiary of China-based firm Gotion High-Tech, could be used for Chinese espionage.
  • The officials expressed concerns during a House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party hearing, stating that the Chinese government could use the plant for intelligence and economic purposes that could be counter to U.S. interests.
  • Gotion High-Tech announced the Michigan project in 2022 as part of a $2.4 billion investment in two EV plants, among other supporting facilities on 260 acres of land.
  • The company is also expected to build another plant in Illinois, which is estimated to cost $2 billion.
  • Both the Michigan and Illinois programs have received pushback from locals and defense officials who warned of the security risks.
